about

Colin Fisher & Ricardo Lagomasino enter into the pantheon of duo specific recordings for the label with and ecstatic cry of fire music glory. Both have recently toured the States as part of Ricardo’s Tzadik signed destruction unit Many Arms, levelling venues with their hyper brutal approach to free improvisation and blown out rockage. Kin, whilst certainly equal in intensity, finds the duo occupying an equal amount of reflective space. Colin was last seen on the label on I Have Eaten The City’s game changing Secret Path’s and continues to be one of Tornoto’s most in demand creative musicians, playing with Not The Wind, Not The Flag, touring Europe with Caribou and recently collaborating live with Laraaji. Lagamasino’s resume is just as impressive, recently recording a collaborative album with Toshimaru Nakamura and Many Arms and has also lent his distinctive percussion skills to Joe Lally of Fugazi last album ‘Nothing Is Underrated’. The pair duel across two seismic and dramatically shifting pieces both nearing the 30 minute mark and offer the listener a window in to their multitude improvisational skills. Kenzo begins bombastically, all blurting saxophones and skittering percussion duelling with each other in skewering, lopsided juts of passion. Fisher approach to the tenor saxophone is highly harmolodic, creating fleeting tapestries of sound that run the whole scale of the instruments capabilities and layering the percussion like shimmering building blocks of melody. Despite the intensity of his flights, there is a resolute warmness to Fisher’s tone and pitch perfect precision to his placing of notes that speaks to a mastery of his instrument, but it’s one he’s willing to recklessly abandon in bursts of perfectly timed fire-breathing fury. Lagomasino is the perfect foil, swinging in and out of roughhewn tom blasts and singing cymbal work with a dumfounding muscularity and infectious relentlessness that really anchor the duo’s music. He’s as comfortable in considered passages of reflective curiosity as he is in atom shredding bouts of heavy hitting mayhem. The Market see’s Fisher switch to guitar and beginning the piece with a melancholically inquisitive scale that calls to mind Bill Frisell as Lagamasino ushers in cymbal showers of texture. Of the two, The Market has more diversity and sees the duo blaze through stinging, acidic guitar wig outs, unrecognisable processed six string experiments and ending with a tinnitus causing noise meltdown. Throughout the duo constantly refer back to the beatific opening passages, but Lagamasino never falls into the trap of playing it straight and his work in these diverse peaks and troughs of sound is remarkably original. Perhaps the most palpable thing about Kin is the sheer love these two distinctive musicians have playing with each other and marks the first and essential step in what promises to be a long a fruitful partnership.
